Open Auditions for 2019 children & youth pirate adventure

Even as our current show has audiences laughing, it’s time to think about Brush Creek’s next wonderful production!

Brush Creek will be holding auditions for actors and would-be actors up through the age of 18 to perform in the 2019 children & youth show, The Pirate’s Paradise, directed by Linda Zellner. Open auditions using cold readings from the script will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, December 15, and at 5 pm on Sunday, December 16 (which provides you an opportunity to catch a performance of Arsenic & Old Lace on either day!). No preparation is necessary, and the auditions are expected to last about two hours. While it isn’t necessary to be there both days, it can sometimes be useful, especially for actors who are new to Brush Creek.

The production will rehearse through January and February to open its three-weekend run on Friday, February 22. There will likely be two casts who will share a total of 12 performances (1 on Friday, 2 on Saturday, and 1 on Sunday each of the three weekends). If you want to know more about rehearsal expectations – or you are interested in being in the show but cannot make either audition date – contact Director Linda Zellner at ljzel@aol.com.

This adventure is another original script by Emily Wood and Michael Wood, who have been writing Brush Creek’s children & youth scripts for the last several years. The production has adventure, mayhem, plenty of rousing good humor – and perhaps just a touch of romance!

The Pirate’s Paradise offers an unusual twist on the typical pirate tale. Many years after the days of Blackbeard and John Morgan, Victorian England’s gives little thought to pirates. Social position, family obligations – and even the quest for the latest, most unique exotic orchid flower are of much greater concern. When professional orchid hunter Frederick Devereux sets out yet again in search of new varieties of the valuable flower, he instead discovers a paradise…a pirate’s paradise. He’d heard vague stories of Libertalia, the utopia for those scoundrels of the sea, but as a man of science and reason he dismissed the tales as romantic nonsense. So Frederick cannot help but be astonished when he not only stumbles upon evidence that the stories are true, but he actually encounters a thriving community of folks whose traditions and norms are neither those of his own society nor exactly what he’d expect from a group of ruthless buccaneers!

Frederick encounters the bold Cap’n Tsunami, the adventurous but noble Captain Reinhardt, and various other crews with their own sometimes bizarre quirks and personalities. He also discovers the seeds of Libertalia’s destruction, brought to life by Frederick’s arrival in the camp. Will the crew of the powerful ship Scarlet Reign bring an end to this pirate Utopia, or is it Frederick himself who offers the greatest threat to Libertalia’s continued existence. Can Frederick find honor among these thieves?

“Arsenic & Old Lace” Auditions Oct. 8th and 9th

Brush Creek playhouse will be holding open auditions for “Arsenic & Old Lace” by Joseph Kesselring at 6 pm, Monday, Oct. 8 — and then again at 6 pm, Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Interested in being a part of this classic comedy, with twists and turn and madcap humor at every turn? As well as a mystery and a sinister villain or two? Director Norman Gouveia is looking forward to assembling a wonderful cast for this production. The script includes 14 roles for actors of all ages — you’ll want to give this a try!

Brush Creek’s auditions require no preparation — we use cold readings from the script and some other exercises — and we are always happy to welcome both experienced cast members and first-time actors.

If you have questions about the production or about casting requirements, contact Director Norman Gouveia at (503)897-7320

Open Auditions for “The Kitchen Witches” come to Brush Creek on July 15 and 16

Brush Creek’s next hilarious comedy is Caroline Smith’s The Kitchen Witches — winner of the 2005 Samuel French Canadian Playwrights Contest — to be directed by John Sams.

Come be part of this entertaining production. Brush Creek will be holding open auditions at 2 pm on both Saturday, July 15, and Sunday, July 16.  The play requires two females in their 50s or 60s and one man in his 30s or early 40s. It also includes a very funny non-speaking role that can be played by young man or young woman.

Samuel French, Inc. describes the play as follows:

Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two “mature” cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called The Kitchen Witches, the insults are flung harder than the food! Dolly’s long-suffering TV-producer son Stephen tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly’s dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel’s, it’s a losing battle, and the show becomes a rating smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer!

The characters are….

DOLLY BIDDLE, who indulges herself with anything life has to offer whenever possible – even if it’s not good for her!? – and her creative imagination knows no bounds. She is intensely proud of her son Stephen, loves to dispense advice along with recipes for cabbage rolls and borscht and hates Isobel Lomax with an intensity usually reserved for detonating nuclear devices.

STEPHEN BIDDLE, a nervous, prematurely balding but decent young man who actually enjoys producing low-budget cable TV shows, even when his Mom is the star. Bright and capable, if somewhat shy, but always reluctant to confront Dolly on her many shortcomings. He’s not a fighter – he’d rather be a lover, but nobody’s asked him yet.

ISOBEL LOMAX  thinks Martha Stewart could learn something about homemaking from her. She trained at the Cordon Bleu and enjoyed a successful career, including her own show “Busy Izzy”. Isobel likes people to think she has a much classier background than reality supports; she would never go out without being properly accessorized. At heart, she is a bright funny and articulate woman who has come to terms with the choices she made early in life.

ROB THE CAMERA GUY (or ROBERTA THE CAMERA CHICK) – Non-speaking role (except for one line!). Rob is a young “Goth” inspired person; Stephen is a little afraid of him/her. He/she cleans up the sets, resets props, carries the portable camera around during the “live broadcasts” and despite his/her appearance, is generally extremely efficient and precise.

The play is scheduled to run Friday, September 22 thru Sunday, October 8.

For more information contact Director John Sams at Sams426@comcast.net.

Brush Creek holds auditions for “It’s a Wonderful Life” on September 26 and 27

Brush Creek is preparing to bring a beloved holiday classic to its stage — and you can be a part of this marvelous holiday production!  “It’s a Wonderful Life” comes to captivating life as a life 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.

Brush Creek will be casting its production using open auditions at 6 pm on both Monday, September 26 and Tuesday, September 27. The auditions will be held at the theater, which is located at 11535 Silverton Road (the intersection of Brush Creek and Silverton Roads — the parking lot entrance is off Brush Creek Road).

This is a wonderful opportunity for actors of all ages and experience levels. The play requires a cast of at least 3 men and 2 women, but director Norman Gouveia hopes to work with an ensemble of 10 to 12 actors or even more!

Rehearsals will depend upon roles and cast availability but typically occur weekday evenings. The production will open Friday, November 18 and run thru Sunday, December 4.

The script by Joe Landry is an adaptation of the original screenplay by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Frank Capra, and Jo Swerling — the screen version directed by Capra and starring Jimmy Stewart is a beloved holiday classic. And now you can help bring it to life for your friends and neighbors here on Brush Creek’s stage!
