COVID-19 has forced Brush Creek to cancel the 2020 season

Brush Creek Playhouse: 2020 Season

Brush Creek Playhouse was forced by the COVID-19 emergency to cancel our 2020 season (following the first two weeks of The True Tale of the Sleeping Beauty). We made this decision reluctantly, but it was necessary both to comply with the state’s mandates and to ensure that our volunteers and audience members remain safe and healthy.

We have tentatively planned a three-show season for 2021, beginning with the children’s show in late Spring, rather than in Winter. We hope that we will be able to operate as planned and return to a full schedule in 2022.

Canceled — Final weekend of “Sleeping Beauty” (3/13-15)

As we have continued to evaluate the overall situation regarding COVID-19, the Brush Creek Board reluctantly decided to cancel — or at least postpone — the final weekend of performances for The True Tale of the Sleeping Beauty.  We do hope to reschedule the performances when the situation stabilizes — so that more audience members can appreciate the hard work these young actors have put into their production!

Anyone who purchased tickets in advance should contact Michael Wood at mdwelpis@comcast.net or (503)508-3682 to arrange for a refund or for a credit to attend a future performance here at Brush Creek Playhouse.

“The True Tale of the Sleeping Beauty” opens Brush Creek’s 2020 season

Brush Creek will be opening our 2020 season on Friday, February 28 with The True Tale of the Sleeping Beauty, written by Emily Wood and Michael Wood. Director Linda Zellner and her two complete casts of young actors are hard at work preparing the production for stage.

This delightful take on the classic fairy tale returns to the Brush Creek stage, where it first appeared in 2014. The production will run for three weekends, with evening performances at 7 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and matinees at 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets  cost $10 ($8 for children 12 and under, students, and seniors 60 and over) and are available at our two ticket-selling partners, Runaway Art & Craft Studio in downtown Salem and Books-N-Time in downtown Silverton). They will also be available at the door beginning 30 minutes before each performance.

The story of the Sleeping Beauty in her castle is a familiar one. The original tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm include some intriguing details — such as the lack of satisfactory tableware as the reason for the evil enchanter’s exclusion from the party (the original tale also includes a total of 13 “wise women” – Brush Creek’s production reduces that number to a more manageable seven).

The True Tale of the Sleeping Beauty gives each of the enchanters a personality of her (or his) own. The six “good” enchanters encounter mutual suspicion, misunderstanding, courage, and even nobility in the face of certain defeat by their powerful former comrade Crimson. Ultimately, though, the story remains the story of true love, and of the curse, which in turn provides a dramatic and powerful villain – a villain whose evil and magic ultimately must face the nature of love and the promises of past friendship.

The play is being produced by arrangement with Evander Dramatic Press.

Another Open Audition for 2020 Children’s Show on December 15

Continuing AUDITIONS — Director Linda Zellner has announced another day of auditions on Sunday, Dec. 15 for the 2020 children & youth show, The True Tale of the Sleeping Beauty, written by Emily Wood and Michael Wood.

Brush Creek understands that the word didn’t get out to everyone who was interested, so we’re happy to to offer another opportunity to audition at 3 pm on Sunday, Dec. 15 at Brush Creek.

Young actors (or would-be actors) up through age 18 are welcome to audition — contact director Linda Zellner at ljzel@aol.com for more information or if you are interested but cannot make the audition date. This production has plenty of speaking roles — but it also includes opportunities for non-speaking cast members if you’d rather not remember lines!

This delightful and fresh version of the classic Brothers Grimm tale features a range of wonderful roles — and it will give you a fresh perspective on the relationship between the princess and her true love. The play will be performed by arrangement with Evander Dramatic Press (Evander Publishing).

Those interested in being part of the production’s technical crew are also invited to attend or to contact Linda.

Brush Creek’s production will open its run in mid-February, with rehearsals beginning early in January.

Dracula comes to Brush Creek’s stage just in time for Halloween!

The cast and crew of Brush Creek’s production of Dracula are well on their way to bringing this tale of terror to the Brush Creek stage!

Brush Creek’s show opens a on Friday, October 18, and will run through Sunday, November 3. In addition to the normal performances scheduled for 7 pm Friday and Saturdays and 2 pm Sundays, Brush Creek has scheduled a special Halloween performance at 7 pm Thursday, October 31. Come to the Halloween performance in a (genuine) costume and get $2 off the price of admission!

Director Norman Gouveia is looking forward to opening night, which will offer a real treat to audiences interested in the classic tale. The script by John L. Balderston and Hamilton Deane is a direct adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel.

In the tale, Lucy Seward, whose father is the doctor in charge of an English sanatorium, has been attacked by some mysterious illness. Dr. Van Helsing, a specialist, believes that the girl is the victim of a vampire, a sort of ghost that goes about at night sucking blood from its victims. The vampire is at last found to be a certain Count Dracula, whose ghost is finally laid to rest in a striking and novel manner. The play is intended for all who love thrills in the theater, and is appropriate for all groups.

Reserved seat tickets go on sale the weekend of October 5 at both our ticket-selling partners, Books-N-Time at 210 N. Water St in downtown Silverton and Runaway Art & Craft Studio at 311 Commercial St. NE in downtown Salem. Tickets are just $10 ($8 for seniors 60 and over, children 12 and under, and students with ID). Tickets are also available at the door beginning 30 minutes before each performance.
